Site history notes
In 1234 Polmont Mill, while not named as such, is mentioned in a grant by King Alexander II to Newbattle Abbey. It included: "the unhindered use of the course of the Smaleburne at their own mill by the lade". Newbattle eventually sold its lands to Holyrood abbey. Nothing further is heard of the mill until 1504 when James Menteith had a tack of Polmont Mill. In 1527 Alexander Menteith complained before the baron court of Abbotskerse that the feudal tenants had failed to maintain the mill or pay duties. The Menteith's became feudal tenants and created an estate known as Polmont Mill, and latterly as Millhall. In 1704 it was confirmed that they had the right to remove materials from Reddingrig and Whitesiderig Muirs for repairing the buildings and as fuel (peat) for firing the mill kilns.
