Sites and Monument Record: Kerse House Walled Garden (SMR 883)

Description
Walls constructed of hand-made brick with dressed stone piers at intervals and at the corners. One of the piers on the west side bears on the external face the date 17.7.77 in bold and neat carving which suggests that this may be the date of construction. Strangely this pier is also the one which has attracted much of the later graffiti with the dates 1778 and 1882. Originally there were heavily moulded doorways in the centres of the west and east walls, but only that in the east now survives. It is of late 18th century style and should also date to 1777. The top centre lintel bears the characteristic keystone motif of this period. The garden now houses the Zenaca Recreation Centre, which includes a clubhouse, changing rooms, bowling green and all weather football pitch. The Orangery on the S side dates only from the 1930s.
