Sites and Monument Record: Wellington Statue (SMR 930)

Description
Stone figure depicting the Iron Duke standing beside his horse 'Copenhagen', set on an ashlar plinth. The Duke of Wellington is represented leaning against the shoulder of his charger supposed to be addressing his officers after the battle of Waterloo. He is dressed in the costume of a Field-Marshall. The horse is in the attitude of pawing.
The stone is hard 'liver rock', form Lesmahagow. The pedestal is inscribed: "Wellington, Born 1769; Died 1852" and "This statue, erected by the Eastern Division of the County of Stirling, 4th May, 1854."

Bought from the executors of Robert Forrest in 1851 and erected by James Gowan senior in 1854. Moved from in front of the Steeple in the High St to its present location in June 1905.
