Sites and Monument Record: Union Inn (SMR 954)

Description
The Union Inn was built c1822 as a hostelry at the junction of the Forth and Clyde Canal with the Union Canal. It is in Georgian Classical style, being three-storey in height with symmetrically disposed windows (three on the upper floors and one to either side of the door). The front faced east across a canal basin and is finished in ashlar with a rusticated ground floor and quoin ends - all now painted. There is a plain parapet on this side. The slated roof is relatively low pitched with plain skews carrying long chimney stacks. The other faces are of coursed rubble. A rounded stair tower on the back used to stand in a courtyard of outhouses and a stable byre, but is now surrounded by late 20th century additions, which include a toilet block and conservatory. Inside on the ground floor there are cast iron columns with decorative capitals.
