Sites and Monument Record: Stenhouse Mill (SMR 1032)
Description
Nothing remains of this feudal mill which stood where the roundabout lies at the NE corner of the Carron Works.
Object detail
When the Carron Works was established in 1759 the water supply had to be guaranteed for the mill. At that time shipments of grain were brought up the River Carron and stored in the mill buildings.
The mill was turned into a forge c1773. The wheel pit was widened and a dividing wall placed along its centre so that it could take two wheels. That on the south worked the forge and the other a turning mill. Lewis Bother was in occupation in 1786. The 1st ed OS in 1860 still shows the site occupied by a forge.
