Site history notes
In the NAtional Museum is a spearhead found "near Falkirk" (NMS DG 53), which was purchased in 1888. Could this be the same one?
"SINGULAR DISCOVERY - On Tuesday last, while the workmen were digging near the foundation of the new railway bridge on the banks of the Carron, an ancient weapon was come upon which we are informed turns out to be a spear, in use among the primitive Romans, and were commonly worn by the youths who aspired to accompany the military peregrinations of their countrymen. It was found seven feet below the surface, but whether dropped by the several armies which are noticed in history as having crossed this river in days of yore, or otherwise, does not yet appear."
(Stirling Journal, 17 June 1859, p5, c3).
