Description
The Town House was built in 1776 by the Duke of Hamilton at the head of the harbour. It was based upon the design at Inverary. In 1885 underground coal workings collapsed and the building had to be demolished.

The Town House was built in 1776 by the Duke of Hamilton at the head of the harbour. It was based upon the design at Inverary. Its northern foundations sat on the old quay wall, which formed a basin to sluice the mud out of the harbour.
A patent slip was constructed to the west of the building in the early 19th century.
By the early 19th century the rooms were used as granaries. It was reconstructed in the middle of that century and the hall was utilised for entertainments and other public purposes.
A clock tower was added c1856.
C1885 it was wrecked by underground workings.
