Sites and Monument Record: Upper Forth Boat Club (SMR 1536)

Description
The clubhouse at the Upper Forth Boat Club is a steel cabin from a Benline ship broken up at the nearby McLellan's Yard. In 2010 the club was presented with a Trotman anchor of about five tons weight by Braemar Alloys who presumably acquired it from McLellans. This was the type of anchor carried by the SS Great Britain. The stock is missing but it is otherwise complete.

Site history notes
The Trotman is a patent type with arms attached to the shank at the crown by a swivel. The idea was that as the anchor takes hold, the upper fluke folds back and contacts the shank, preventing it from fouling the anchor cable. This type was in use from the early 1850s to about 1910, perhaps later on old merchant vessels.
