Sites and Monument Record: Clydesdale Bank (SMR 1587)

Description
Substantial two-storey stone villa of 1866. The main facade faces south onto Duke Street and is of coursed rubble with a slightly projecting west wing terminating in a gable. The gable is surmounted by a narrow-waisted obelisk finial. Below this is a ventilation slot in the form of a long cross with pointed terminals and below that again are two lightly pointed-headed windows set under a prominent pointed hood mould. The point is truncated and carries a carved geometric design. In the spandrel between the window arches is the date 1866. The ground floor windows reflect those of the first floor in proportions, but have recessed moulding and low arches - as do all the ground floor windows. East of the west gable the main facade has a similar arrangement of two-over-tow windows provided with their own gablet, complete with spherical finial, at wallhead - a blank shield occurring in the spandrel area. Between these windows and the west wing is the main doorway with deeply recessed moulding and a simple Romanesque arch, echoed by the single window above. The whole facade is further unified by a broad chamfered string course between the two floors. This is doubled and forms a pediment over the doorway, which consequently projects slightly to form a slender porch. It is provided with its own skewputt, plain flat finial, and central dimple (reflected in the gate and boundary pillars). The skew of the gable and gablet is ridged with a prominent rib. Elsewhere the wallhead carries an ogee cast iron rhone.
The west face possesses a broad central chimney stack with chamfered steps and a moulded cap. There is another plain shield in the centre of the chimney, with an arched window on the floor below it and another flatter arched window directly below that. The east face is much plainer, with a single window and door on the ground floor.
