Description
The place from which in September 1680 Donald Cargill - the ejected minister of the Barony Church in Glasgow - excommunicated Charles II. In lay in the open beside the road from Larbert to Stirling, on the estate of Woodside.

In the forenoon Cargill preached to a large congregation, lecturing on Ezekiel xxi.25 and 1st Cor.v.13, before excommunicating the King and the Dukes of York, Monmouth, Lauderdale and Rothes, Sir George McKenzie, and Sir Thomas Dalzell. These were the king's agents who prosecuted the Covenanters. In the afternoon he preached from Lam.iii.31, 32.
The sentence of excommunication sounded Cargill's death-knell. Upon 22 October a proclamation was issued and a reward of 500 merks offered for his apprehension.
