Site history notes
Built by the Duke of Hamilton as a school for the children of local mining families in 1856. Following the 1872 Education Act it was no longer required for that purpose. The building was refurbished with a games room, reading room and recreational area, as well as a large meeting hall (doubling as a shooting gallery). A bowling green was inserted into the grounds, along with a flagpole gifted by Mr & Mrs Robertson of the Redding Coal Co. The property was handed over to the community at a ceremony in 1911 and also became the home of the Free Colliers.
In November 1928 the building was badly damaged by fire causing £2,000 worth of damage. Funds were raised to rebuild it and in September 1929 the Marquis of Clydesdale rededicated it.
