Sites and Monument Record: South Alloa Piers & Wharfs (SMR 1967)
Description
Timber wharves and piers extended along the south bank of the Forth for 350m up river of the stone ferry pier. They originated as a small number of coal piers at the termination of the South Alloa Branch railway. Coal was exported and before long timber from Scandinavia was imported for use as pit props. This necessitated the construction of the wharves. Saw mills grew up in the village to process the timber before onward transportation by rail.
