The Gael Iron Co was founded in 1875 by Walter Whitelaw who went into partnership with Mr Robertson at the former Abbots Engine Works belonging to Thomas Sherriff (Edinburgh) adjacent to Abbot's Foundry at Abbotshaugh.
In 1882 the foundry moved to the now empty Union Foundry at Lock 16
The company was wound up in 1888 and the Union Foundry site sold to the Portdownie Iron Co.
