Sites and Monument Record: Kelpies (SMR 2081)

Description
The Kelpies tower 30 metres above the Forth & Clyde canal forming a dramatic gateway to the canal entrance. Sculpted by Andy Scott; Yorkshire-based SH Structures were awarded the £5 million contract to fabricate and construct them. Construction began on site on the 17th June 2013. Each of The Kelpies weighs over 300 tonnes. They are constructed of structural steel with a stainless steel outer skin. They are positioned either side of a specially constructed canal lock and basin. The official completion date was 27th November with a topping out ceremony featuring Duke & Baron, the two Clydesdale life models for the Kelpies. However, landscaping work and snagging continued until 21st April 2014, when the extension to the Forth & Clyde Canal and the turning pool were opened to boaters.
