The boiler house would generate steam to drive the electricity generator and to heat the crude oil to make it flow (Middle East crude is waxy and viscous at low temperatures) and for other purposes around the refinery. There was a company at that time called Henry Balfour & Co, Engineers and Ironfounders, of Leven in Fife.
