Sites and Monument Record: River Carron canalisation (SMR 2102)

Description
In its lower reaches the present course of the River Carron is entirely manmade. The historical debouchment of the river into the Forth was at Orchardhead, north of its current position. One of the last major loops, at Grangemouth, was removed in 1783. Until then it had been used as a harbour.
Remnants of the stakes and wattle fences and stone dykes used to retain the river in its newly allotted course can be seen throughout the waterway from the Carron Ironworks eastward.
