Son of William Skelton, formerly of Haggs and Margaret Stewart of Denny. He was very prominent in the local Boys' Brigade and was the first boy from Denny and Dunipace to be awarded the Queen's Badge. After leaving school he joined British Aluminium in Falkirk as an Engineering Apprentice. While there he became a Trades Union Shop Steward. In the 1970s he studied Economics at the University of Stirling and then attended Jordanhill College where he trained to become a teacher. After a short period lecturing at Falkirk Technical College he became a Modern Studies teacher at Falkirk High School where he taught until he retired.
