Description
Members of an excursion by the Glasgow Archaeological Society to Rough Castle Roman fort on 9 May 1891. Some men are wearing bowler hats, one is wearing a top hat and some deerstalkers. The woman (the minister's wife, Mrs Carruthers) is wearing a long dark skirt. Her daughter, Mary, is also in black.
"MacLuckie is, I've assumed, in the deerstalker behind the tree. Others present should/could be the members of GAS' Antonine wall Committee - I hazard George Neilson second from left in second-from-back row, looking up to the right, and possibly MacGregor Chalmers - maybe bowler-hatted with elbow in MacLuckie's stomach. Bare-headed chap on 'Macgregor Chalmers'
right is W. G. Black, secy of Glasgow society. Others should include - Mr Jolly, Inspector of Schools, and Barclay Murdoch of Caperrig, who was older (middle of front row on 'Neilson''s left?). No sign of other members of Committee, Alexander Park. What about James Russell of Longcroft?-- in second row from back in light-coloured cap? Another individual who might have been there was the 30-year old George Macdonald (possibly left of Neilson)." [Information from L Keppie].
