Description
Seven workers are standing in front of two of the coke ovens, known as 'The Kilns'. They are holding forks with a large number of long tines. A long-handled three-pronged fork lies in front. Above are the hoppers which delivered coal into the ovens.

During firing, which took 20-30 hours, the oven doors were bricked up. When the gases had been driven off, the doors were opened, the coke was quenched by spraying water over it and it was drawn, still warm, from the backs of the ovens with long rakes. Coke production was smelly and unhealthy. Coke was used in the ironfounding industry.

The colliery was to the south of Main Street, and east of the Old Engine Pit. Mr Nimmo is seated.
