flint
Description
Two struck flakes; one has a small area of possible retouch along one edge; the other seems to lack formal retouch but does appear to have been used. The flakes appear to derive from two separate nodules/cobbles to judge from the different appearance of the flint. Both are sizeable flakes of good quality grey flint in reasonably fresh condition – and it is principally the raw material that catches the eye as it is clearly from a non-local, high quality Cretaceous flint source. That is, non-local in the sense of being most likely from somewhere in Eastern England or N Ireland and obviously that begs the question of how and when the material reached Shieldhill – in antiquity or the more recent past?
The find spot – around NS 8789 7664 – to the west of Shepherd’s Brae below the Three Kings.
