Subject notes
When long wall coal mining replaced the stoop and room method, the roof was kept up by timbers rather than columns of coal. George Stewart, a Bo'ness cashier, saw the efficiency of importing ready cut timber in various sizes. Soon Bo'ness was nicknamed 'Proptown' and smelt of resin. George Stewart went into partnership with a Glasgow businessman, James Love. So successful was the pit-prop business that Love & Stewart set up its own shipping company to import the timber from Russia and Scandinavia and to export coal.
