Subject notes
The Grand Theatre later became a cinema, after considerable remodelling.. "Uncle Tom's Cabin" by Harriet Beecher Stowe made a great impact on this side of the Atlantic, causing much concern about the state of African Americans. Ironically the Clearances, taking pace at the same time, attracted less concern amongst liberal society.
'Blacking up' continued to be accepted up to the 1970s with the 'Black and White Minstrel Show' on television.
