Location: (NS 8558 7309) At Slamannan Cross facing Main Street. Description: The clock monument stands 35ft (10.7m) tall. It consists of a large fluted column with an ornate capital of birds in foliage bearing the clock itself. Above the clock is an obelisk. The column rests on a square plinth with drinking fountains and basins on two opposing sides. The inscription on the back states that it was: "Erected by the tenantry and inhabitants of Slamannan and neighbourhood in memory of the patriotic devotion of George Peddie Waddell, only son of Mr and Mrs Peddie Waddell of Balquhatstone, who volunteered for active service in South Africa with the Lothians and Berwickshire Imperial Yeomanry, and after the hardships of a year's campaign, died at Germiston, Transvaal, on 8 th February, 1901, aged 26 years. Amiable, generous, esteemed by all, he freely gave his service and life in the cause of the country that he loved." Sculptor: Mr Hayes of Edinburgh. The clock was by Barrie's, Edinburgh. Unveiled by: George Ure of Wheatlands in July 1902, but it was only in the following year that piped water was led to it and the rest of the village.
