tie; man's

Production date
1960s
Description
Man's ties from ICI. Forest green in colour with white diagonal stripe with chemical symbol in yellow on it at front and back. The ties were given to members of special club in the company the Anthraquinone Club (AQ Club). The symbol on the tie is a double benzene ring (Anthraquinone).

The AQ Club were founded in 1929. It came from professional chemists at the ICI site wanting a social/ technical club of their own. At its peak it has 2-300 members of a workforce of 2000 on site. It was mostly chemists and managers. They did technical visits to other places and had return visits, by people including Nobel prize winners, so it was a significant activity hub. The ties were prestigious you had to be a member or a distinguished visitor to get one. The donor assumes it was initially dyed with ones of their own dyes and later maybe not. The ties were probably 1960s.
