pipe; tobacco
Production date
1660-1690
Description
Fragment from a 17th century Dutch tobacco pipe. It has a bore hole of 2.48-2.68mm, which for a British pipe would suggest a date range of 1660-1690. However, it has three individual lozenge-shaped stamps along one seam and one on the other, each containing a fleur de lys, which suggest an earlier date. Similar stems have been found at Scalloway Castle, where they were dated 1625-1640 (Hall & Lindsay 1983, 38); at Aberdeen dated 1625-1650 (Davey 1982, 218). Though one from the Custom House in London (D3E635) was date to 1680-90.
