Subject notes
Paddles were replaced by screws on tugs early in the 20th century although paddles were still popular for smaller excursion steamers. Sailing ships were able to compete with steam, especially on long voyages, until the development of the triple expansion steam engine in the 1880s. Sailing ships continued to transport bulky, non-perishable cargoes over long distances until the Second World War.
