Description
The driver sits on board a van belonging to the Slamannan Co-operative Society Bakery. It has ventilators at the front, two small front wheels and two large rear wheels. It is hitched to a pair of horses. They are wearing blinkers.

The vents would be to prevent condensation arising from the warm bread. Pairs of horses were used where the load was heavy or the route hilly. Motor vans began to replace horse-drawn ones from about 1910 onwards but it was the 1970s before the last horse-drawn house deliveries ceased.
