The hospital was built on the Gartcows estate at a cost of £100,000 raised by public subscription. It replaced an earlier hospital at Thornhill Road, Falkirk. It was opened by Prince George (later the Duke of Kent).It was another 15 years before the National Health Service came into being. The hospital has grown from 205 to 495 beds.
