butter cooler

Description
Unglazed terracotta butter cooler with glass insert. Terracotta section has a floral decoration. This was a commercial butter cooler. They were made of porous fired clay. The base was placed in a dish of water fresh water and the clay sucked in the water and as it evaporated it lowered the temperature inside the cooler keeping the butter in the glass cool. The glass dish could be removed for use on the table.
This style of cooler has been used since 1900s but it is unclear what age this one is, it is a very good condition.
