clock; mantle
Description
Mantle clock with veneered mahogany case inlaid with boxwood. It has an arched top with a round dial set into the front. The white dial has the hours on the inside and minutes on the outer ring. Painted in the centre is "Jn Hoyland/ Bte". The name is that of the garrison officer at Blackness in the 1820/30ss and not the clockmaker. The glass front is set in a hinged brass frame but the fastening catch is missing. There is a brass lion head finial on the top pierced by the carrying ring. The feet are short and stubby and appear to be later than the clock. The heart-shaped catchplate for the lock on the back door is white. The door is arched and has a single groove set just inside the edge. Written in pencil on the inside of the door near the top is "96/ P)291./ 4//49AP/ JNS 9/57" which presumably refer occasions upon which the clock was worked upon - the initials of the person undertaking the work and dates. The disc-shaped pendulum has a brass front and lead back - latter scratched "Poy Tady Biloh", though there may be an earlier inscription below. The suspension arm is extendable having a screw thread at the base, and has a feathered top.
Part of the boxwood inlay of the line set the edge is missing in the top right quadrant and the veneer is cracked on the top. There is also a key for the clock.
