key (ARP public shelter)

Description
Steel key with an oval brass tag attached by a key ring. The tag is stamped "A.R.P. PUBLIC/ TRENCH SHELTER" on marking out lines. The Peddie Waddels of Balquhatstone were officers in the Slamannan ARP during the Second World War. Here, as elsewhere in the Falkirk district, the air raid shelters were kept locked and only opened when the air raid sirens sounded. The fact that it is recorded as a "trench shelter" suggests that it was one cut in the public park early on in the war.
