 Description
An old bearded man in a jacket, trousers without turn-ups and highly polished black shoes is sitting in a leather armchair. He is wearing glasses to read a newspaper and is smoking a pipe. He is by the kitchen range which has a large oven and a cast iron kettle and pot on the hob. Man was grandfather of photographer.

This is the kitchen of a middle-class family. Woodwork was normally stained dark brown and wall paper had a dark varnish applied. The range, probably made in the Falkirk area, had a coal fire which heated an oven , a hob, supplied hot water and heated the kitchen.
