Subject notes
Motor vans replaced horses and carts after the First World War, except for some house-to-house deliveries where horses continued to be used into the 1970s. It was mainly businesses that owned telephones at this time. Only a few houses had their own telephone. One phone book covered all of Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The 'Co-op' played a major role in communities in the late 19th and 20th centuries. Most households were members of a Co-op Society and bought most of their messages or groceries at the store. They received a dividend ('the divi') based on how much they spent.
