The driver sits on a two-wheel cart belonging to James Waugh, miller. It is hitched to a pair of horses, although at the time of the photograph being taken the cart is lightly laden.

Normally carts were pulled by one horse, the option being to use a heavy draught horse like a Clydesdale where the loads or hilly terrain made it necessary. However, sometimes two horses were needed.
