A woman in a cardigan and woollen blouse is working with cotton wool on the spine of a book's hardcover. To her right is a pad with a tooling knife and gold leaf. The woman is probably preparing the spine of the book for the craftsman.

Pages were sown together into sections and then glued and bound together before the hardcover was added. The title and author were then printed on the cover in 24 carat gold lettering, held in place by egg albumen. 'The stronger it smelt, the better it was'.
