View of six women standing on the surface. There is a dusting of snow on the ground. The women are dressed in skirts, shawls, jumpers, blouses and shoes. Pit props, used to support the mine roof where the coal has been removed, are piled on the ground behind them.

Women performed jobs on the surface. Some of the 'pit-heid lassies' were 'pickers', that is they stood beside a moving conveyor belt removing stones from the coal.
