View from above Grangepans looking north-east over Thirlestane. The back gardens have various sheds for hens, coal or outside toilets. Outside stairs run up to the second storey of the houses. In the distance is the winding gear of Grange Colliery and a ship being broken up at Bridgeness.

There were several collieries working in and around Bo'ness at this time. Coal was exported via the coal hoist at Bo'ness Docks to Scandinavia and elsewhere. The name Grangepans comes from when coal was used to boil seawater to produce salt.
