Description
Four male farm workers are building a haystack, watched by a fifth man. Two forkers are on the ground, preparing to lift up a load of hay. A striddler is standing on a two-wheeled box or coup cart, to pass the hay up to the man building the haystack.

Hay was stored over the winter in stacks. They had to be skilfully constructed so as not to be blown down in winter gales. The top was thatched to ensure the rain ran off. Hay was used to feed the cattle and over the winter.
