View of a gate house with stone arched gate. The wall above is of stone and brick. There is a dormer window with leaded glass. Several panes seem to be broken. The roof is pantiled. The general appearance is one of dilapidation.

The Works had developed somewhat haphazardly since the mid 18th century. It was re-designed and reconstructed in the late 1870s and 1880s to make production more efficient. The North Gate was demolished and replaced with a double gate for road and rail access.
