View of the Steeple with the top of the spire missing. The clock face has been damaged. Rubble lies in the street. To the front is the Cross Well and a Barr's cart is to the left. The Commercial Bank is on the corner of Kirk Wynd.

Lightning struck the Steeple in June 1927, badly damaging it. Casualties were Barr's delivery horse which was struck by falling masonry and Isabella Barr who lived beside the Steeple and whose leg was broken.
The Steeple was built of stone from Brightons Quarry and was completed in June 1814.
