Lightning struck the Steeple in June 1927, badly damaging it. Casualties were Barr's delivery horse which was struck by falling masonry and Isabella Barr who lived beside the Steeple and whose leg was broken. The Steeple was built of stone from Brightons Quarry and was completed in June 1814.
