These were the men who were trapped for 10 days in the Mine. Water from old mine workings higher up the brae to the south burst into the pit trapping the miners. Twenty-one were rescued that day and, after heroic efforts, five more were rescued nine days later. Thirty-seven miners died.

While trapped the five had nothing to eat, only brackish water to drink and no light for fear of firedamp. They spent some time sharing their First World War experiences. They were in good condition when rescued, and were sought after to speak at concerts held for the disaster relief fund
