Description
Iron medal commemorating the sinking of the "Lusitania". On the obverse is an image of a sinking ship and embossed on it is "KEINE BANN WAR" meaning 'No contraband goods" and "DER GROSS DAMPFER LUSITANIA DURCH EIN DEUTSCHES TAUCHBOOT VERSENK 5 MAY 1915" which translates as 'The liner Lusitania sunk by a German Submarine 5 May 1915'. On the reverse is an image of a ticket queue with a skeleton in the kiosk. Above the window are the words 'CUNA LINIE . Arranged vertically down the side of the window is the word 'CUNARD' and below the counter 'FAHRKARTEN AUSGABE (ticket office). At the extreme left of the crowd a man reads a newspaper with the headline 'U BOOT GEFAHR' (translates as U boat in danger). Next to him is a top-hatted and bearded figure, a representation of the German Ambassador to the USA, Count Johann-Heinrich von Bernstorff, raising a warning finger.
This is a British copy of a German medal, the British version was made for propaganda purposes and sold for 1 shilling in a cardboard box.
