token; counter (Cumberland Jack)

Description
Circular disc with young bust of Queen Victoria on the obverse and George and the dragon on the reverse. The obverse reads reads "VICTORIA QUEEN OF GREAT BRITAIN" and the reverse "TO HANOVER/1837".

Tokens with the words "To Hanover" are know as Cumberland Jacks. They were produced as satirical counters. When Victoria was crowned she couldn't take up the role of King of Hanover as women were not allowed to take on the title. Her uncle the Duke of Cumberland was sent to Hanover instead. He was very unpopular and the tokens were made to 'celebrate' his departure. They were produced from 1837 for the next few decades and were made illegal in 1883.
