In the foreground are boilers and behind them a row of moulding shops. In the background is the clock tower of the main offices. A freight train sits on the Carron private line. Railway sidings and freight trucks and exterior of works buildings can be seen also.

The works was rebuilt in 1890 with the layout depicted. The Carron Company had some 60 kilometres of private sidings and its own engines and wagons. The wagons in the foreground belong to the North British Railway Company.
