petticoat; woman's
Production date
Circa 1890
Description
Black unfinished petticoat, possibly a slip or underskirt. Black with ruffled end with gathered trim. Item has been patched and altered, line of tacking near the top that suggests an extra gather was being added to possibly shorten the item or create a more detailed look to it. The item has a pocket of a different material which looks like a modern synthetic material. Closed with button which due to the location of the drawstring may have been to the side of the item, however the drawstring or button may have been added later and might not be in the right place. The seams suggest it was either a cut down item or at some point dramatically altered.
It is not clear if it was a work in progress, an altered piece or a old petticoat used to practice certain types of needlework on, the latter would explain the pocket and gathers.
