The men are patients at Stirling District Asylum. Later known as Bellsdyke Hospital, it was established for adult patients with mental health problems. It was located beside the Royal Scottish National Hospital (for children with learning disabilities). he District Asylum was for patients with mental health problems. Before the introduction of the 'care in the community' policy, more use was made of institutions like Bellsdyke. It was organised as a 'village' community with dances, hairdressers etc.
