horn; bass

Description
The bass horn is very interesting. It has been a labour of love for its maker who may well have been its player also. It is a copy in wood of the bass horn pattern usually of copper or brass, but with more elaborate keywork. 6 finger-holes plus 3 or 4 keys are normal, this has only 1 finger-hole and 10 keys. It is also very light with thin wooden
construction, usually wooden upright serpents are having bassoon-like features (the so-called Russian Bassoon) and are heavier. I don't think there was much commercial production of bass horns after the 1830s, but as a "special" this could have been later.
Used by the Falkirk Foundry (later Town) Band.
