Subject notes
Until the 20th century, where a two storey house was designed for two families living one above the other, the stair was usually built outside the house, partly to save space. Roofs were either of slate or pantiles. Slate was obtained from quarries such as those at Ballachulish and Easdale in Argyll, or from Wales. Pantiles are red roof tiles moulded with a ridge which gives a distinctive pattern to the roof and were made locally.
