brooch; trumpet

Description
Cast copper alloy trumpet brooch found at Cowden Hill, Bonnybridge.
"Type R(ii) with full acanthus moulding. Complete apart from the pin and a small fragment lost from the catchplate return. The six-coil spring is held by a rolled sheet axis through a central cast lug; a spur from this lug holds the internal chord. The spring has been broken and repaired in antiquity: the surviving part of the pin is a single tightly-fitted coil round the axis, separate from the spring. The plain head has a marginal lip and no chain loop attachment. On either side of the well-formed acanthus knob is a triple-collar moulding, the central decorated with transverse incised lines (except on the underside); that nearer the head is poorly executed. The bow is angular in section and has raised marginal lips. The footknob is a separate piece and has three collars, the central with transverse incised lines. The catchplate is decorated on its outer side with a border of dot-decorated pendant triangles and a larger dot-filled triangle. The catch side has a faint marginal line on its lower edge with a dot-defined line running from its end at a tangent to the concave curve."
